Wayne Rooney says what he thinks would be a success for
Manchester United next season as they continue to rebuild.
Michael Carrick has been given the manager’s job on a full-time basis after leading the team to third in the table which was a considerable achievement considering where they were before Christmas.
But now Carrick faces a very different situation with the team needing to continue moving forward and they will face the added demands of playing in Europe.
Rooney says that Carrick has restored hope but now for that to continue, they will need to challenge in the league and maybe win a cup.
“I think it is progression when you think of where Manchester United have been over the past few years, it has been difficult for the fans to find some happiness from it but I think since Michael came in there is hope and belief again among the United fans,” said Rooney.
“To finish third I think they’ve done quite well, they are back in the Champions League and hopefully they are going to sign some players who can help them to take the next step.
"I think there is progression, I think it looks better and hopefully we will see the benefits of who I see is a very good coach.
“For his expectations, I spoke to him last week and he will be trying to win everything that is going.
"But you have to be realistic as well, they have to progress and I think that if United finish in the top four next season and maybe have a challenge and win maybe the FA Cup, and try and do well in the Champions League, again I think that is progression.
“We all want them to win the league but we have to be realistic and ask have they got enough.”
Rooney believes that
Bruno Fernandes can also be the captain the club needs to win the Premier League again.
"I think he is incredible, and to be honest in the first year or so and I was asking myself was he a
Man Utd captain or leader, was he going to inspire people and I wasn’t sure," said Rooney.
"But then if you look at him over the past few years to get the numbers he has in a team which is struggling.... I’ve seen a leader in him, I think he gets more out of his teammates, he’s there every week, never misses a game, even when the team is playing badly.
"And I know around the training ground he is trying to inspire people so I think he is a leader and I think with a few more players around him hopefully he can lead us to the Premier League."
