Manchester United have their eyes on a second midfied reinforcement who appears to favour
Old Trafford to Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain.
Mateus Fernandes has emerged as the favourite to move to United with the signing of
Ederson from Atalanta all but sealed.
But at the same time United are still some way short of West Ham's valuation for the Portuguese.
The Red Devils have put a strong emphasis on strengthening their midfield this summer.
With Casemiro now having said an emotional farewell and with the club ready to listen to offers for Manuel Ugarte, United are looking for at least two midfield signings.
Fernandes is a strong contender to sign for United if they can't get Elliot Anderson who has been valued at more than £100 million and appears to be set to join Manchester City.
United also hold a strong interest in landing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, though the Magpies’ valuation would make it difficult.
Meanwhile Fernandes has enjoyed a strong season at the London Stadium despite the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.
West Ham are expected to cash in on several players as they restructure for the second tier of English football and United would hope to knock them down from their £80 million asking price for Fernandes.
It is thought that West Ham could be knocked down to around £50 million which would be a more attractive option for United with the midfielder also known to have the backing of United captain Bruno Fernandes - who knows him as an international teammate.
He is viewed as a good option to combine with Bruno Fernandes as a more defensive player who would allow the United captain to express himself more in attack.
It is thought that a move for the West Ham player will be made sooner rather than later. And positive
news for United fans and the hierarchy at the club is that the player prefers the option of going to Old Trafford ahead of the finalists in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, an option that appears to have dropped down the list is Carlos Baleba, with Brighton still holding out for a minimum £80m and nearer the £100m mark for the Cameroon midfielder.
