Gary Neville says he “couldn’t believe” what he saw as
Manchester United outplayed and beat Manchester City, claiming it was one of the “best performances” in any era in the club’s history.
Second-half goals from Bryan Mbuemo and Patrick Dorgu capped a brilliant performance as the rejuvenated Red Devils inflicted further damage on City’s title chances with a deserved
2-0 win at Old Trafford.
It was Carrick’s first game since he was appointed head coach for the remainder of the season following the sacking of Ruben Amorim last week.
And he adjusted the formation with four at the back in a system where Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot were encouraged to get forward.
It came after Amorim refused to alter his back three system even though it was not delivering results.
And now Neville looking at the start of Carrick’s tenure at Old Trafford said: “I know him very well, he’s composed, he’s class, he knows the game, he’s intelligent, he’s got a good understanding of Manchester United performance looks like.
"He played in probably the best Manchester United side when you look at Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Giggs in that frontline - you are never going to see world class like that I don’t think again.
"I can’t believe what I’ve just watched. I’ve done eight of United’s last 10 games, I’ve seen Burnley, I’ve seen Wolves, I’ve seen West Ham, I’ve seen Everton here, I’ve seen Bournemouth here, I’ve seen nothing like that."
Neville felt that the attacking display from United was good enough to grace any period in United's history.
"The system matters, I’m surprised that Ruben Amorim didn’t get a better performance out of the players but what is completely clear to see here is the change in attitude, intensity and everything," said Neville.
"Look, that’s not good for the players in some ways as they’ve been able to shift but they’ve not been responding, individuals, a message I don’t know what it is.
"But how that transformation has come from the last five or six weeks from that Everton game when they lost to 10 men to today, that it was one of the best performances that you’ll see in any era by a Manchester United team in a football match, it’s an unbelievable football match from start to finish."
