Michael Carrick had the perfect start with a 2-0 win in the Manchester derby and here's how the players rated with one surprising player standing out.
United produced a dominant performance against City and second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed a deserved victory.
United had created better chances in the first half and were on top throughout. Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a string of fine saves to keep City in the game.
But it was
Casemiro in the middle of the pitch who held the team together and stopped City from playing that really caught the eye.
This is how the United players rated:
Senne Lammens: Lost his bearings to needlessly concede a first-half corner but made amends with a save from Max Alleyne. Good hands in the second half. 7
Diogo Dalot: Booked for a reckless early challenge on Jeremy Doku and then a poor pass straight out of play, but did well to recover his poise after that. 7
Harry Maguire: Should probably have scored early in the game but excellent defensively against Erling Haaland. A real front-foot performance. 8
Lisandro Martinez: Superb sliding block on Haaland early in the second half. Read the game well and was good on the ball. 7
Luke Shaw: Booked in the early stages as well but coped well with Antoine Semenyo, who had Phil Foden in support in the first half. Intelligent performance. 7
Casemiro: Should have scored, but excellent recovery tackle on Haaland after Kobbie Mainoo gave the ball away. A magnificent holding midfield performance. 9
Kobbie Mainoo: Lovely shimmy past Semenyo a reminder of his talents. A bit careless with a loose pass to Haaland in the second half but deserves a run in the team. 7
Amad: A real livewire. Tormented Nathan Ake and then got Nico O'Reilly booked inside three minutes. Could have easily had a goal and was a threat throughout. Hit the post late on. 8
Bruno Fernandes: Unlucky with the narrowest of offside calls. A sublime pass to create a chance for Dorgu and perfect pass for the goal. Bruno at his best. 8
Patrick Dorgu: A surprise selection but what an impact. Sharp on the ball, good first-half volley and really alert to get the second goal. 8
Bryan Mbeumo: Exceptional work rate and clever movement to try and pull City's defenders out of position. Good volley to test Donnarumma and clinical with his next chance. 8
Substitutes
Matheus Cunha: Made an impact at both ends of the pitch. Big tackle on the edge of his own area and assist for Dorgu's goal. 7
Manuel Ugarte: Little time to make an impact after coming on for the shattered
Casemiro. 6
Mason Mount: Thought he had scored late on but ruled out for offside. 7
Ayden Heaven: A late introduction. 6
