Jose Mourinho has given
Manchester United a glowing endorsement of a transfer target he believes would be the "perfect" addition to
Rúben Amorim’s squad.
The former United boss, now managing Fenerbahce, has urged his old club to pursue a deal for teenage defender Yusuf Akcicek, comparing the youngster to ex-United star Raphael Varane.
Akcicek, an 18-year-old left-footed centre-back, has emerged as a standout talent in the Turkish Super Lig this season, making 14 appearances under Mourinho’s guidance at Fenerbahce, including six in the Europa League.
His composed display in a recent victory over rivals Galatasaray caught the eye, prompting Mourinho to heap praise on the teenager. "He reminds me of Varane at that age—calm, strong, and with a big future," Mourinho said post-match, per reports in Turkey. "If United can get him, it’s the perfect move for them."
Manchester United’s interest in Akcicek comes as Amorim looks to bolster his defensive options amid a challenging season at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have struggled with injuries and inconsistent form, sitting 13th in the Premier League table with just nine games left to salvage European qualification. With Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire among the current centre-back options, Akcicek’s youth and versatility could provide long-term stability at the back.
The report from Manchester Evening News suggests that Fenerbahce would be open to negotiations if a substantial offer is tabled. While no specific fee has been quoted, the Turkish giants are said to be aware of growing interest from Premier League clubs, with United at the forefront.
Mourinho’s public backing could serve as a nudge to his former employers, with whom he won the Europa League in 2017 during his two-year stint.Akcicek’s rise has been meteoric.
Having debuted for Fenerbahce’s senior side earlier this season, his blend of physicality and technical ability has drawn comparisons to elite defenders. United’s scouting team is believed to have watched him in action multiple times, with Amorim reportedly keen to integrate young talent into his rebuilding project at the club.
Mourinho’s relationship with United remains complex but influential. Despite his acrimonious exit in 2018, his knowledge of the club’s needs and his track record of identifying talent—such as Varane, who he coached at Real Madrid—lend weight to his recommendation.
For Amorim, landing Akcicek could be a statement signing as he seeks to stamp his authority on a squad in transition.United face competition, however, with other unnamed English clubs also monitoring the teenager.
Fenerbahce’s willingness to sell could hinge on the size of the bid, especially as they aim to fund their own ambitions under Mourinho’s leadership. For now, United fans will hope their club acts swiftly on the Portuguese manager’s advice.
