Manchester United have received a significant boost in their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with the striker’s price tag reportedly slashed to £60m-£70m.
The 22-year-old Slovenian, likened to Erling Haaland for his 6’5” frame, speed, and clinical finishing, scored 21 goals in 45 appearances last season.
United’s need for a reliable No. 9 is evident after a dismal 44-goal Premier League campaign, with Rasmus Højlund managing just four league goals.
Manager Ruben Amorim, tasked with reviving United’s attack, has already secured Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for £133.5m, but Sesko remains a priority to bolster the forward line.
United’s recruitment director, Christopher Vivell, could be pivotal in securing the deal, reported The Mirror.
Having scouted Sesko extensively during his time at Leipzig, Vivell’s familiarity with the player and his representatives may streamline negotiations.
Sesko’s camp has reportedly signaled openness to a move to Old Trafford, despite United’s lack of European football next season, a stance that contrasts with his 2022 decision to join Leipzig over United for stylistic reasons.
However, his recent Instagram post showcasing Leipzig’s 2025/26 kit suggests he might still be content in Germany.
Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich previously showed interest, but Arsenal’s shift to Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres has cleared a path for United.
Leipzig’s reduced asking price, down from £68m-£85m, reflects a lack of a bidding war, making the deal more feasible.
Still, United’s financial constraints, exacerbated by their 15th-place finish and Europa League final loss, mean sales of players like Alejandro Garnacho or Jadon Sancho are necessary to fund the transfer.
Sesko’s physicality, goal-scoring prowess, and ability to perform against top defenses, like Bayern Munich, make him an ideal fit for Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
His 39 goals in 87 Leipzig games highlight his potential to become a world-class striker.
As United prepare for their US pre-season tour, starting against West Ham on July 27, securing Sesko could signal a bold step in their attacking rebuild, offering fans hope for a resurgent 2025/26 season.
