Manchester United's pursuit of
Benjamin Sesko has taken a further twist after his price was slashed to £60million.
The
Red as well as Newcastle United honed in on the 22-year-old after it appeared he was ready for a move and was willing to put pressure on Leipzig.
But now club insiders have thrown cold water on the idea that Leipzig will let him leave this summer, reported the
Express.
The Slovenian, likened to Erling Haaland for his 6’5” frame, pace, and 21 goals in 45 games last season, appeared an exciting prospect at Old Trafford.
Already with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo at the club and Marcus Rashford having been loaned to Barcelona, Sesko seemed the final piece in the jigsaw in attack.
Amorim noted, “At the moment, we need to be really careful when we sign a player. If we have to start the season with this squad, then I'm happy because all the players want to be here.”
Sesko’s potential fit in United’s 3-4-2-1 system is evident, but still Leipzig’s ra fee of €70-80m (£60-70m) plus €5-10m add-ons price tag, would have made a deal difficult.
United may need to sell a player such as Alejandro Garnacho or Antony, to fund a move.
Newcastle have also been interested and a move them was thought to hinge on Alexander Isak’s potential departure.
However, Sesko’s recent Instagram post showcasing Leipzig’s 2025/26 kit and reports of a “gentleman’s agreement” allowing a future exit have fueled speculation he might stay.
Leipzig’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has lowered their leverage, yet Sesko’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, dismissed loan rumours and emphasized respect for Leipzig’s stance, indicating no rush to force a move.
Sesko’s 13 Bundesliga goals last season, despite a slow start, and praise from teammates like Yussuf Poulsen—“he has everything a top number nine needs”—underline his value to Leipzig, who may retain him for another year to maximize his development and transfer fee.
