Some Manchester United players are reportedly losing confidence in Ruben Amorim’s tactics as his difficult start at Old Trafford continues.
Amorim, 40, took charge in mid-November after United paid €11 million (£9.25m) to Sporting Lisbon to secure his services.
However, his time at the club has been marred by poor results, with limited training time due to United’s hectic schedule—averaging a match every four days.
Since his arrival, only five teams have picked up fewer Premier League points, leaving United 15th in the table and heading for their worst league finish since their 1974 relegation.
Despite this, Amorim remains firmly committed to his 3-4-2-1 system, a stance that has sparked doubts within the squad.
According to The Mail, a section of United’s players feel that even when they do win, it’s often due to individual brilliance or luck, rather than Amorim’s tactics.
“The feeling is, ‘We got away with one, but we might not be so lucky next time,’” a source reportedly told the newspaper.
This sentiment stems from United’s recent habit of scoring late goals, rescuing points in games where their overall performances have been criticized.
The Red Devils have scored late winners or equalizers against Leicester, Fulham, Rangers, Southampton, Manchester City, and Viktoria Plzen—masking what many believe to be systemic issues.
United’s dressing-room discontent is nothing new, with similar frustrations surfacing under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag. However, Amorim’s patience appears thinner than his predecessors, openly acknowledging the immense difficulty of the job.
Following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham—United’s third loss to Spurs this season—Amorim admitted to Sky Sports:
“What you see and discuss every week, I also see. I have a lot of problems—my job is so, so hard here. But I stick with my beliefs.”
United will look to turn their fortunes around when they travel to Goodison Park on Saturday to face Everton.
