Rio Ferdinand has called on Manchester United to stand by Ruben Amorim despite the club’s dismal form, which has left them sitting 15th in the Premier League.
United suffered their 12th league defeat of the season on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Tottenham in North London. The result leaves them 12 points above the relegation zone and a staggering 31 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has struggled to turn things around. Though he insists he’s not concerned about his job security, the Portuguese coach admitted the challenge has been overwhelming.
“I have a lot of problems, my job is so, so hard here,” Amorim said after the Spurs defeat.“But I stick with my beliefs. We just need to face it and not run away.”
Despite growing speculation that United could part ways with Amorim, Ferdinand believes the club should remain patient. When asked on social media if he would make a managerial change, the former United defender firmly backed Amorim, simply replying: "No - coach stays!"

Neville Slams United’s Tactical Setup

While Ferdinand has defended Amorim, fellow United legend Gary Neville was far less forgiving, criticizing the team’s structure during the Spurs loss.
United’s midfield was decimated by injuries, forcing Amorim to deploy Bruno Fernandes in a deeper role alongside Casemiro. But Neville was unimpressed, pointing out their poor positioning.
"The distance between the two central midfielders for United is all wrong," Neville said on Sky Sports."Look where Fernandes is, look where Casemiro is. It breaks all rules of football."
The former United captain went even further, calling the team’s shape “absolute madness” and claiming their midfield spacing was “worse than you’d see in under-9s football.”
With United on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish, the pressure continues to mount on Amorim. However, Ferdinand’s plea for patience suggests at least some figures connected to the club believe he deserves more time.
