Marcus Rashford received messages of support from six
Manchester United players, including captain Bruno Fernandes, following his Aston Villa debut in the FA Cup.
The 27-year-old forward joined Villa on loan earlier this month after falling out of favor under
Ruben Amorim, who criticized his training performances.
Having missed United’s previous 13 matches,
Rashford made his long-awaited return to action, coming on for the final 30 minutes of Villa’s 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Tottenham on Sunday.
After the match, Rashford took to Instagram to thank Villa fans for their warm welcome. Several of his former United teammates reacted, with Bruno Fernandes, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, André Onana, Diogo Dalot, and Matthijs de Ligt all ‘liking’ the post.
Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho, currently on loan at Chelsea, caused a stir by commenting “Freedom”, a remark that did not sit well with United fans.
More Messages from United Stars
When Rashford’s loan move to Villa was confirmed on February 2, three United stars publicly wished him well:
- Luke Shaw: “Good luck my bro.”
- Alejandro Garnacho: “All the best Rash.”
- Antony (on loan at Real Betis): “All the best brother.”
Rashford Impresses on Debut, Earns Praise from Emery
In his 30-minute cameo, Rashford made an impact:
- Completed two take-ons
- Won four of his six duels
- Recorded a 93% pass accuracy
Villa boss Unai Emery was pleased with Rashford’s influence, particularly alongside fellow new signing Marco Asensio, who joined on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
"How we were playing in the last 30 minutes with Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford was really good," Emery said. "We have to create again and build our team, progressing our structure as soon as possible, getting the performances like we did today."
Villa’s Option to Buy Rashford for £40m
Villa’s loan deal for Rashford includes a £3 million wage contribution, covering much of his reported £325,000-per-week salary. The club also has an option to buy him permanently for £40 million in the summer transfer window.
Amorim: Rashford Didn’t Fit My Style
After Rashford’s departure, Ruben Amorim explained why the forward didn’t fit his vision at United.
"I couldn't put Marcus to see the way you're supposed to play football and to train the way I see it," the United boss admitted.
"Sometimes, a player thrives under one coach but struggles under another. I just wish the best to Rashford and to Unai Emery. He’s a very good player, and hopefully, they can connect."
With Rashford off to a positive start at Villa, the coming months could determine whether his time at Manchester United is truly over.
