Manchester United have reportedly decided to retain
Ruben Amorim even if the club fails to win the Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag midway through a turbulent 2024/25 season, has endured a tough introduction to English football.
United currently sit 16th in the Premier League, a staggering fall from grace for a club of their stature. Yet, despite inconsistent domestic form, the club’s board is convinced that Amorim deserves the opportunity to rebuild the squad this summer.
According to
The Guardian, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox view Amorim as a long-term project and are keen to back him in the transfer market — win or lose in Dublin.
A club insider told the outlet: “There’s trust in Ruben’s process. The results haven’t been ideal, but structurally and tactically, we’ve seen signs of improvement. The summer will be pivotal.”
Amorim is already preparing for a busy window. Matheus Cunha of Wolves and Liam Delap of Ipswich are among his top attacking targets. Meanwhile, outgoings are expected to help fund those moves.
Key names likely to be sold include Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Casemiro, and even Rasmus Højlund, who has struggled to meet expectations this season.
The strategy is clear: clear the wage bill, bring in high-energy players that suit Amorim’s pressing style, and rebuild with a younger, more cohesive squad.
Despite poor league form, United’s Europa League journey has kept spirits afloat, with victories over teams like Athletic Club and AS Roma.
A win against Spurs would not only deliver a trophy but also secure Champions League football — and with it, an added £100 million in revenue.
But even if that doesn’t materialize, United’s hierarchy is adamant that Amorim deserves a full summer to implement his ideas.
The decision to stick with the Portuguese coach signals a shift from the club’s recent cycle of short-termism. It’s now up to Amorim to justify that faith — and prove that, even without silverware this season, the rebuild is truly underway.
