Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed he would “absolutely love” to take up a role at the club.
He told how he feels a deep connection with Old Trafford and believes his experience could help the next generation of players.
The former goalkeeper, a key figure in United’s 1999 Treble-winning side, who won five Premier League titles as well as three FA Cups,  said he remains passionate about the club’s progress under the new INEOS leadership and would welcome the chance to be involved behind the scenes in the future.
“I would absolutely love that,” Schmeichel said when asked about returning to United in an official capacity.
Manchester United will always be my club. It’s where I achieved everything I ever dreamed of in football, and if there was ever a way I could help, of course I would want to do that.”
The Dane, now 61, has watched United’s transition closely under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and sporting director Jason Wilcox, who have been reshaping both the football and backroom structures since taking control of sporting operations earlier this year. Schmeichel believes that returning former players in key roles can help restore the club’s identity.
“United have to keep their traditions alive,” he said. “Bringing in people who know what the badge means — who understand the standards that Sir Alex Ferguson set — that’s how you rebuild properly.”
Speaking to the BBC he said: “You now have a head coach. Then you get a director of football or technical director. You have a head of recruitment, who is very powerful. The CEO is powerful. You have people deciding on who is coming in.
“The signing of Sesko was a bit weird to me. We had Hojlund, starved of service for two years. You only need to see what he is doing now at Napoli with [Kevin] De Bruyne and [Scott] McTominay to play with.
“I have consistently said Hojlund will be a 25-goal-a-season striker, but he needs service. At the time, we brought [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo in – players who would give Hojlund first-class service.
“We spent £70m or so on Sesko [but] we don’t have that number six we should have. Then there’s the goalkeeper situation as well. This season alone, we have conceded nine goals from goalkeeping errors. That is too much.
“When I played, or Edwin van der Sar, or David de Gea, the brief was to win 10 points a season. When I played, the manager was in charge. He said: ‘Him in, him out.’ Now it is different people with different agendas.
“How can you create an environment stable enough to have a team that can go on the pitch and win every year?”
While no formal discussions about a role have taken place, his comments have sparked speculation that Ratcliffe’s regime could look to bring Schmeichel back as an ambassador or mentor — echoing similar roles held by ex-teammates in the past.
