Manchester United’s restricted winter transfer window may not be an isolated issue, with the club expected to face further financial limitations in the summer.
Head coach
Ruben Amorim was handed a modest £25 million in January, which was used to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.
Despite losing
Marcus Rashford and Antony on loan, United were unable to bring in any attacking reinforcements before the deadline.
The Manchester Evening News reports that United prioritized long-term summer spending over short-term fixes, resisting the temptation to make a panic buy.
This decision leaves Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund as Amorim’s only recognized strikers for the remainder of the season.
But due to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) there is no guarantee they will have much more money to spend over the summer.
United May Be Forced to Sell Key Players in the Summer
With financial constraints still in place, United could be forced to sell one of their most valuable players in the summer to comply with PSR regulations.
According to The Guardian, both
Alejandro Garnacho and
Kobbie Mainoo were available for transfer in January and could be put up for sale again in the next window.
Garnacho is valued at around £70 million. Mainoo would cost at least £80 million.
Napoli failed with a bid for Garnacho in January, while Chelsea showed interest in both the Argentine winger and Mainoo.
Rashford’s Sale Could Provide Financial Relief
There is hope within United’s hierarchy that a permanent move for Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa could help with PSR compliance.
Villa have a £40 million buy-option on the England international, and as a homegrown player, his sale would be recorded as pure profit on United’s balance sheet.
With major off-the-field planning already underway, the summer transfer window will be crucial in shaping the club’s future—both in terms of recruitment and financial stability.
