A sensational swap deal involving
Alejandro Garnacho and Christopher Nkunku could now happen.
Both
Manchester United and Chelsea are expected to have a busy conclusion to the January transfer window.
The Red Devils may see several players depart as they look to manage Financial Fair Play (FFP) issues.
Academy graduate Marcus Rashford has been linked with a move, while Garnacho has drawn interest from Napoli. Surprisingly, Chelsea has also emerged as a contender for his signature.
According to ESPN, the 20-year-old Garnacho would prefer a move to Chelsea if he is forced to leave Old Trafford.
United manager Ruben Amorim, however, has not ruled out the possibility of his departure in the coming days.
Speaking on the matter, Amorim said: "I don't know what will happen. Let's focus on the team and the players we have here.
"We don't know what can happen until the window closes. Anything can happen."
He continued: "I'm focused on the games, and he's [Garnacho] here—he's a Manchester United player.
"He was really important for us today, and we'll see what happens in the next few days.
"I think he's improving in every aspect of the game. Today, he was better playing inside, also outside, switching positions, and improving in recovery.
"You can see that even until the 90th minute, he's always recovering and helping.
"Sometimes he shows frustration, which is good because he wants more. I believe he has the potential to improve significantly in every area of the game.
"What I can say is he understood what I was trying to do—it was very clear. I just want to help them, but, in the end, it’s the players who do the job."
While Garnacho appears open to a move, United has also been encouraged about their prospects of landing Nkunku. Reports suggest that the French forward is "open" to leaving Chelsea this month.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has not entirely ruled out Nkunku’s departure, saying: "With Joao [Felix] and Christo [Nkunku], most managers only use one attacking midfielder.
"They’re top players, and I like both, but they struggle because most of the time, we only play with one attacking midfielder. I’m not saying they’ll leave."
United’s interest in Nkunku dates back to his time at RB Leipzig before Chelsea secured his signature.
If United reignites their interest, they may face competition from Bayern Munich. However, a potential swap deal involving Garnacho could put them in the driving seat.
