Kobbie Mainoo is set to turn down a lucrative contract extension with
Manchester United in favour of a move abroad, sources close to the player have confirmed.
The 19-year-old, who has been hailed as one of England’s brightest talents, is reportedly seeking a fresh challenge outside the Premier League, with clubs in Spain and Germany leading the race to secure his signature.
Mainoo, who broke into United’s first team in 2023, has made 45 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.
His performances earned him a call-up to the England senior squad, where he has already won five caps. However, despite his rapid rise, Mainoo is said to be frustrated by the club’s ongoing struggles and lack of consistent Champions League football.
Sources indicate that Mainoo’s representatives have informed United’s hierarchy of his intention not to renew his contract, which expires in the summer of 2026.
This decision could force the club to consider selling him in the upcoming transfer window to avoid losing him for free.
It is understood that Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs monitoring the situation, with Real Madrid seen as the frontrunners.
A source close to the player said, “Kobbie loves Manchester United and appreciates everything the club has done for him, but he feels this is the right time to test himself in a new environment.
"He’s particularly inspired by the success of other English players abroad, like Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid.”
United, under the management of Erik ten Hag, have endured a turbulent season, sitting eighth in the Premier League table after 26 matches. The club’s inability to compete for major trophies is believed to be a key factor in Mainoo’s decision.
United’s new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has promised a major overhaul of the squad, but it appears Mainoo will not be part of those plans.
The potential departure of Mainoo would be a significant blow to United, who view him as a cornerstone of their future midfield. The club had reportedly offered him a new five-year deal worth £80,000 a week, which would have made him one of the highest-paid teenagers in English football.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano commented on the situation, saying, “Mainoo’s decision is a statement of intent. He’s not just looking for money; he wants a project where he can develop and win titles. Real Madrid’s interest is very concrete, but Bayern Munich are also in the conversation, especially given their need for a dynamic midfielder.”
Mainoo’s potential move would continue a growing trend of young English players seeking opportunities abroad.
In recent years, players like Bellingham, Jadon Sancho, and Tammy Abraham have thrived outside the Premier League, raising questions about the development pathways available in England.
Manchester United have declined to comment officially on Mainoo’s future, but a club spokesperson said, “Kobbie remains an important part of our squad, and we are focused on supporting his development.”
The situation is likely to intensify speculation around United’s transfer strategy, with fans and pundits alike watching closely to see how the club responds to the potential loss of one of their brightest academy graduates.
