Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie, leaving them with work to do in the return leg at Old Trafford.
Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring with a composed finish in the first half, capping off a strong start for United. However, a controversial penalty decision in the second half allowed Mikel Oyarzabal to equalize from the spot.
United were the superior side across the 90 minutes, creating several chances. Zirkzee came close twice in the first half, while Harry Maguire was unlucky to see his header crash against the crossbar. Despite their dominance, Ruben Amorim’s men failed to capitalize and will now need a win at home next week to progress to the quarter-finals.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 7
Had little to do in the first half and was helpless for the penalty. Pulled off an excellent late save to deny Sheraldo Becker and secure the draw.

A solid display, handling aerial battles well and making an important block in the first half. Looked comfortable going forward.
Matthijs de Ligt – 7
Distributed the ball well from the back and defended solidly before being forced off with cramp.
Noussair Mazraoui – 7
Disciplined in defense and rarely troubled down his flank.
Diogo Dalot – 5
Struggled against Ander Barrenetxea’s movement and made some sloppy passes, particularly in the second half.
Casemiro – 6
Controlled possession well in the first half but faded as Sociedad grew into the game.
Bruno Fernandes – 6
Hit the post with a well-struck effort and dictated play, but lacked the cutting-edge pass to break down Sociedad’s defense again.
Patrick Dorgu – 7
Defended well and got forward with intent when the opportunity arose.
Joshua Zirkzee – 7
Took his goal expertly with a precise low finish and looked a threat throughout the first half before tiring later on.
Rasmus Hojlund – 5
A quiet game for the striker, who struggled to make an impact with limited service.
Alejandro Garnacho – 5
Started brightly with an early effort but faded as the match progressed. Substituted just after the hour mark.

Substitutes

Christian Eriksen (on for Casemiro, 67') – 6
Kept possession well but didn’t create much of note.
Victor Lindelof (on for de Ligt, 67') – 6
Slotted into defense smoothly and made a crucial late clearance.
Toby Collyer (on for Garnacho, 67') – 7
Energetic and confident in midfield, showing maturity against experienced opposition.

Manager - Ruben Amorim – 6

Picked a logical lineup and saw his side control the match for long periods. However, he had limited options to change the game after Sociedad’s equalizer.
United now turn their focus to the second leg at Old Trafford, where they must secure victory to advance in the competition.
