Kobbie Mainoo has been given World Cup advice by Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs as he considers his future at the club.
Giggs says that the youngster should think twice about leaving Old Trafford in January and instead look to fight for his place in Sunday's game against Aston Villa.
After having a loan request rejected by United in the summer, Mainoo has been linked with a move after failing to start a single Premier League game this season.
And he is keen to push his way into the England set up for the World Cup next year having impressed at Euro 2024.
But Old Trafford legend Giggs thinks Mainoo should stay put and fight for his spot.
"Every player wants to play in the World Cup and be on the pitch for their club," said Giggs. “But if he goes on loan somewhere, he’s only got three or four months to really hit the ground running.
"What club has he gone to? Is it a club that’s getting beaten every week, and it’s not doing him any favours? Or is it somewhere he’s going to be in and out of the team?”
Ruben Amorim says Mainoo is competing with Bruno Fernandes for a place in the team and that is the reason why he has had limited chances.
But Giggs continued: “He needs to make sure that when he gets his chance, he does well, especially around this time when the games come thick and fast.
“I thought he did well the other night when he came on against Bournemouth. He just needs to take his chance, and anything can happen.
“If he suddenly takes these opportunities and he’s playing regularly until the end of the season for Man United, that will give him more chance [at the England Squad] than going anywhere else.”
Mainoo has a good chance to face Villa with Casemiro suspended for the match while United are also missing Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui who are at the Africa Cup of Nations.
"It seems like it’s out of his hands because he isn’t getting picked, but he needs to take that power back and make sure that when he does get a chance, he needs to take it. And that’s in training. That’s every day," said Giggs, reported The Sun.
“We don’t see training. It’s not about sulking or having the hump. You need to be at it every day in training. And knowing that when you are called upon, you can produce."
