Manchester United have opened talks with Harry Maguire over a new contract, with both the club and player keen to reach an agreement that extends his stay at Old Trafford — though discussions are expected to include a significant wage adjustment.
According to TalkSPORT, United are prepared to offer Maguire a short-term extension to his current deal, which runs until the summer of 2026.
The club want to reward his resurgence under Rúben Amorim, but within a tighter wage structure aimed at aligning with new financial regulations.
Maguire, who joined United from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, has enjoyed a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign after re-establishing himself in the first team.
Despite losing the captaincy last year, the 32-year-old defender has impressed with his leadership and performances — particularly in United’s recent 2–1 win at Anfield.
A club source told TalkSPORT: “There’s a mutual respect between Maguire and the new coaching team. He’s responded brilliantly to Amorim’s demands and remains a key part of the squad both on and off the pitch.”
United’s hierarchy reportedly view Maguire as a valuable figure in the dressing room with his experience as they also look to bring through young players.
However, the club’s financial restructuring under the INEOS-led ownership has made wage discipline a priority, meaning Maguire would likely need to accept a reduced salary to extend his stay.
Maguire is understood to be open to discussions, with sources close to the player saying he “feels settled again” at United and is eager to help the club challenge for major honours after several turbulent seasons.
The England international has made over 200 appearances for United and remains one of the most experienced defenders in the Premier League. While talks are still at an early stage, both parties are optimistic that an agreement can be reached before the end of the year.
If finalised, Maguire’s new deal would underline his successful revival — a testament to his resilience and Amorim’s faith in senior leadership.
