Manchester United have been handed a major boost as
Lisandro Martínez has returned to full first-team training at Carrington following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The Argentine defender has been out since suffering a serious knee injury in February, which required surgery and months of rehabilitation.
His return comes as welcome news for manager
Rúben Amorim, whose side has endured defensive inconsistency during Martínez’s absence.
United confirmed on their official website that the 27-year-old rejoined team training earlier this week, taking part in several drills and tactical sessions with the rest of the squad.
The club’s medical staff are said to be “delighted with his progress” but will continue to monitor his condition closely before clearing him for match action.
Amorim, speaking after Thursday’s session, praised Martínez’s attitude and commitment throughout his recovery: “Lisandro is a warrior. He’s worked tirelessly with our staff and shown real leadership even while injured.
"We’ll bring him back at the right time, but having him on the pitch again is a big lift for everyone.”
Martínez has established himself as one of United’s most influential defenders since arriving from Ajax in 2022.
His aggression, leadership, and composure on the ball have made him a fan favourite, and his absence this year has been deeply felt. United have often looked unsettled at the back, with a rotating cast of centre-backs struggling for form and fitness.
While the club remains cautious, Martínez’s return to full training suggests he could be available for selection within the next few weeks, possibly after the next international break. His presence could be crucial as United face a demanding fixture list, including key Premier League and European clashes.
For Amorim, Martínez’s comeback represents more than just a defensive reinforcement — it’s a statement of progress in United’s ongoing rebuild. The Argentine’s return brings renewed optimism to a squad seeking stability, leadership, and momentum heading into the crucial winter period.
