Manchester United’s technical director
Jason Wilcox has outlined the club’s long-term vision under new leadership, promising targeted investment and a focus on building a sustainable, competitive squad capable of challenging for major honours.
Wilcox said the club now has a “clear plan” to restore
United to the top of English and European football — one built on intelligent recruitment, patience, and stability.
“We have got a clear plan. We know what we’ve got to do, we know the areas of the team that we’ve got to improve,” Wilcox told
ManUtd.com.
“For us to get in the top four consistently, to challenge for Champions League places, to win the Champions League and Premier League — we’ve got to invest in the squad. We’ve got to buy the right
players. The right players who are talented but also who can deal with the pressure and take the squad forward.”
Wilcox, who joined United earlier this year from Southampton, was keen to stress that the club’s approach to recruitment will prioritise character and adaptability as much as technical ability.
“It’s not just about buying elite talent,” he said. “It’s about signing players with the right mentality, who fit the culture and can bring something different to the team.”
The 53-year-old also warned supporters that the process will take time, emphasising that there is no quick fix for the challenges facing the club.
“It’s going to take time. It’s not a quick fix,” Wilcox admitted. “We needed to change the playing squad, and we’ve now made some really good additions this summer. But we have to be patient — this is about building something sustainable.”
Wilcox’s comments reflect a broader shift in United’s football operations, with new CEO Omar Berrada and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe driving a coordinated, long-term rebuild.
Under manager Rúben Amorim, the club is looking to align its recruitment, academy, and playing philosophy — a structure Wilcox believes will form the foundation for United’s next era of success.
