Manchester United have no plans to allow Kobbie Mainoo or Joshua Zirkzee to leave the club during the upcoming January transfer window, despite interest from several clubs across Europe.
According to a Sun report, United have made it clear internally that both players are considered key to Rúben Amorim’s rebuild, and any talk of temporary or permanent exits will be rejected.
The decision highlights the manager’s growing reliance on youth and developing core players as part of a longer-term vision for the club.
Mainoo, 19, appeared one of United’s brightest homegrown talents since breaking into the first team last season but he has had limited chances under Amorim.
His composure on the ball, tactical maturity, and ability to control midfield tempo have drawn comparisons with former United greats. Clubs in Spain and Germany are believed to have made informal enquiries, but Amorim reportedly views Mainoo as “untouchable”.
Meanwhile, Zirkzee — signed from Bologna this past summer — has impressed in patches since arriving at Old Trafford.
The Dutch striker’s technical ability, pressing intensity, and versatility have earned him praise from Amorim and his staff, who still believe he can develop into an important figure for United’s attack.
Reports suggest several Serie A sides were exploring potential short-term deals, but those approaches have been firmly dismissed.
The decision to block exits comes amid a clear strategic shift under new ownership influence from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.
Rather than reacting to short-term pressures, United appear determined to build around a young, stable core. Both Mainoo and Zirkzee fit that profile — promising, adaptable, and aligned with Amorim’s high-intensity system.
As the January window approaches, United’s stance sends a strong message about continuity and belief in their current squad.
After years of constant turnover and reactive decision-making, the club’s commitment to keeping its young stars suggests a more disciplined and sustainable approach.
For Amorim, the priority is clear: keep his best young players, build consistency, and continue the progress already visible at Old Trafford.
