Legendary broadcaster Des Lynam has called on Gary Neville to take over at Manchester United.
Lynam, 82, believes Neville is the ideal candidate to restore the Red Devils to Premier League glory, despite the ex-defender's managerial struggles during his brief stint with Valencia.
Neville's former teammate Ruben Amorim, who took over as United manager in November, has already faced scrutiny.
Amorim recently described his side as "perhaps the worst United team ever," despite achieving some early European success.
However, United remain stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League, prompting Lynam to propose Neville as the man to transform the team’s fortunes.

Lynam’s Case for Neville

Writing in The Telegraph, Lynam explained why he believes Neville is the best choice for the Old Trafford hot seat: "A few years ago, I suggested that the only man who could steer United back to their former glory was their one-time captain Gary Neville.
"I put it to him, and while I touched a nerve, Gary made it clear that his business interests and punditry for Sky would take precedence over any thought of football management again.
"But here goes—Neville would still be the best man for the job. He has Manchester United blood running through his veins.
"He is deeply hurt by the club’s present predicament. He has a powerful personality and would be a strong presence in the dressing room.
"Oh, and the money men had better watch out—Neville is an astute businessman. If he were to save Manchester United, he would be forever remembered. He is tough and would be ruthless when needed."

Managerial Record in Question

While Lynam sees Neville as a potential savior, his managerial track record leaves much to be desired.
Neville managed Valencia for just 28 games during the 2015/16 season, winning only 10 matches overall and just three in La Liga. He was sacked within months, with his side languishing in mid-table.

A Missed Legacy Opportunity?

Lynam emphasized that Neville’s business and broadcasting success, while impressive, would pale in comparison to the legacy he could build by saving United.
"He is hugely successful as a broadcaster, but then almost every Tom, Dick, and Rio has had a go at that," he said.
"Apparently, Neville has made a great deal of money from his business exploits, but will he be remembered for them? If he were to save Manchester United, he would be forever remembered."

Challenges Ahead for United

With Amorim under pressure and the club’s form languishing, United face difficult decisions.
Whether Neville would consider stepping into the dugout remains uncertain, but Lynam’s impassioned plea adds another layer to the ongoing conversation about how to restore the Red Devils to their former glory.
