Manchester United edged past Rangers 2-1 in a dramatic Europa League clash on Thursday night.
The match began controversially when Matthijs de Ligt thought he had opened the scoring with a header, only for the goal to be disallowed after Leny Yoro was penalized for an apparent foul.
Rangers then took an unlikely lead in comical fashion, as former United loanee Jack Butland misjudged a punch and inadvertently sent the ball into his own net.
Late drama ensued when a Harry Maguire mistake allowed Cyriel Dessers to equalize for Rangers. However, Bruno Fernandes came to United’s rescue with a stoppage-time winner, securing the three points.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana
Earned his first European start for United and delivered a reliable performance when called upon. Could be in contention to start against Fulham. 7
Leny Yoro
Was unlucky to be penalized for a foul that canceled out United’s first-half goal. Subbed off just before the hour mark. 6
Matthijs de Ligt
Had a goal ruled out in contentious circumstances and was replaced at halftime. A frustrating evening for the defender. 6
Lisandro Martinez
Showed attacking intent, including a shot that forced a save from Butland. Delivered a fantastic cross for Fernandes' late goal. 7
Amad Diallo
Operating on the right wing, he contributed with the corner that led to De Ligt’s disallowed goal. A solid but unspectacular outing. 6
Toby Collyer
Struggled early on, even apologizing for losing possession, but settled into the game and had a steady performance. 6
Christian Eriksen
Made the most of a rare start, with his corner forcing Butland’s own goal and a dangerous cross that Maguire failed to convert. 7
Diogo Dalot
Provided an outlet on the left wing and participated in attacks but had limited impact. Shifted to a back-three role after Yoro's substitution. 6
Bruno Fernandes
Dropped deeper to accommodate Eriksen and was inconsistent in the first half. Redeemed himself with the match-winning goal in added time. 8
Alejandro Garnacho
Arguably his best performance under Ruben Amorim. Threatened consistently, with one shot blocked and another striking the post. Earned loud applause from the Stretford End. 8
Joshua Zirkzee
Worked hard and linked play effectively but never posed a serious goal threat. 6

Substitutes

Harry Maguire
Missed a great chance from an Eriksen cross and was directly at fault for Rangers’ equalizer. 4
Tyrell Malacia
Had a sloppy showing after coming on in the second half. 5
Manuel Ugarte
Missed a golden opportunity to double United's lead. 6
Kobbie Mainoo
Came on late, likely with a view to starting on Sunday. 6
Rasmus Højlund
Introduced with United 1-0 up but had little impact. 5

Manager

Ruben Amorim made five changes to the starting lineup, with Garnacho shining as the standout recall. Eriksen’s inclusion proved pivotal, and United created enough chances to justify the result. A late Fernandes winner added gloss to the manager’s decisions. 7
Manchester United will hope this result provides a much-needed boost as they turn their focus to domestic challenges.
