Richard Keys has suggested that
Ruben Amorim "already wants out" of his role as
Manchester United manager and Gareth Southgate could soon take charge at Old Trafford.
Amorim, who joined United in November after a highly successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League.
His tenure has been marred by six league defeats and mounting pressure.
Despite his reputation for implementing a 3-4-3 system with success in Portugal,
Amorim’s insistence on sticking to this formation at United has faced criticism, with many arguing the squad lacks the players to execute it effectively.
According to Keys, the United hierarchy favored Amorim’s appointment but not his tactical approach.
The outspoken manager has not shied away from bold statements, even describing his team as “maybe the worst in Manchester United’s history.”
Keys believes Amorim’s blunt honesty has alienated the dressing room and predicts he may already be seeking an exit.
Keys’ Prediction: Southgate to Take Over
Taking to Twitter, the former Sky Sports presenter shared his views on United’s current situation: “Best informed guess re-United. They wanted Amorim but not 3-4-3. Had to sack ETH & accept it.
"Amorim lost players when he called them shit. He wants out. Cheaper to replace him than spend £1b on players to play his system. He goes. PR king Gareth Southgate takes over. Let’s see...”
Amorim’s Stance: No Compromise
Amorim has remained steadfast in his philosophy despite growing criticism.
After a December loss to Newcastle, he was asked if he might adjust his tactics. His response was unequivocal: “Maybe—or you continue with your idea and they have to change the coach.
"It is a choice everyone has to make in football. I was here because of my idea, and I will continue with my idea until the end.”
Pressure on United’s Ownership
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently assumed control at United, has already dismissed Erik ten Hag earlier this season.
Ratcliffe supported Ten Hag during the summer transfer window, even offering him a contract extension, only to sack him months later.
The Ineos chief is unlikely to want another managerial misstep but could be forced to act if results do not improve.
Southgate’s Potential Fit
Southgate, currently without a managerial role following his departure from the England national team, has been linked to the United job in the past.
During his time with England, he earned widespread acclaim for guiding the team to the finals of Euro 2020 and the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
His media savvy and ability to foster team harmony could appeal to a club navigating turbulent times.
While Amorim’s future remains uncertain, the pressure to secure consistent results and restore harmony at Old Trafford continues to grow.
Whether Amorim can turn things around—or if Southgate will be called upon to steady the ship—remains to be seen.
