Altay Bayındır has been confirmed to play in goal for Manchester United in the derby.
It has left many United fans surprised as the club needed a new goalkeeper due to the poor performances of Bayinder and
Andre Onana so they bought Senne Lammens.
But now after bringing in a new keeper,
Ruben Amorim has said he is not ready.
United have had a keeper crisis so far this season and despite investing heavily in Onana they have loaned him out for a season.
Instead of giving the starting place to Lammens, the door has been opened for Bayındır, who has patiently waited for his opportunity since arriving at Old Trafford in 2023, but has far from convinced when he has had chances.
Manager Rúben Amorim confirmed the decision ahead of the clash with Manchester City, insisting he has faith in the 26-year-old.
He said: “Altay has shown real professionalism and consistency in training. He has been waiting for his chance, and now he gets it in the biggest game of the season.”
Bayındır’s task could hardly be more daunting but the Turkish international has big-game experience, having won titles with Fenerbahçe and collected caps for his national side.
Meanwhile, United’s injury problems only add to the challenge against City. Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount, and Diogo Dalot have been ruled out, further weakening Amorim’s options.
Yet the focus will fall firmly on Bayındır, whose performance could set the tone not just for the derby, but for his standing as United’s potential long-term No.1.
Lammens now seems to have been brought in as a developmental option, while veteran Tom Heaton also provides cover. And the message is clear: Bayındır has been handed the gloves for now, and this is his chance to make the position his own.
For United fans, the sight of a fresh face in goal might bring cautious optimism after months of turbulence. For Bayındır, it is the opportunity of a lifetime — one that arrives on the grandest stage possible, in the cauldron of a Manchester Derby.
