André Onana’s turbulent spell at Manchester United has come to an abrupt pause, with the goalkeeper completing a season-long loan move to Trabzonspor after a viral video proved to be the final straw for manager Rúben Amorim.
Onana, signed from Inter Milan for £47m, was tipped to be David de Gea’s long-term successor but struggled from the outset.
His debut season was plagued by high-profile mistakes in the Champions League and inconsistency in the Premier League.
But according to reports, what accelerated his exit was a clip that circulated online during international duty in Cameroon, showing him playing football casually in the street with friends.
While harmless on the surface, the video was said to frustrate Amorim, who viewed it as symptomatic of a lack of professionalism at a time when United are battling for credibility in a dismal season.
Sources suggest Amorim felt Onana’s attitude and focus were no longer aligned with the squad’s needs, particularly with a Manchester derby looming.
Onana’s departure leaves United alarmingly light in goal. The club will now rely on Altay Bayındır, who has yet to convince as a reliable No.1, and Senne Lammens, the young Belgian brought in from Club Brugge this summer.
Veteran Tom Heaton, though respected, has not started a Premier League game in years.
The fallout marks a humiliating end to what was meant to be a cornerstone signing. Onana had been a key figure in Inter’s run to the Champions League final just 15 months ago, yet in England he failed to replicate that form.
For United, the situation highlights deeper recruitment failings. The club now finds itself without a dependable goalkeeper at a critical juncture, while fans are left wondering how another big-money acquisition unravelled so quickly.
Onana’s loan to Trabzonspor may offer him the reset he needs, but at Old Trafford his future looks increasingly uncertain. What was once billed as a new era between the posts has instead become another reminder of United’s instability in their rebuild.
