Manchester United have set their sights on Brighton's dynamic midfielder Carlos Baleba, as manager
Rúben Amorim continues to reshape the squad.
According to
The Athletic and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano,
United have initiated contact through intermediaries to explore a potential deal for the 21-year-old, who has emerged as one of the league’s most promising talents.
Baleba, who joined Brighton from Lille for £26 million in August 2023, has drawn comparisons to former Seagulls star Moises Caicedo, now at Chelsea.
Last season, he made 40 appearances, scoring four goals and providing two assists, showcasing his ability to dominate midfields with his athleticism and ball-carrying prowess.
Ranking fourth in the Premier League for progressive carries per 90 minutes (6.3), Baleba’s ability to break lines and transition play makes him an ideal fit for Amorim’s high-intensity 3-4-3 system.
United’s midfield has been a focal point for improvement, with Amorim seeking a box-to-box presence to complement recent attacking signings like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Reports also suggest a £74 million move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is nearing completion.
Baleba’s defensive tenacity, coupled with his knack for driving forward under pressure, could provide the balance United have lacked alongside ageing stars like Casemiro and the injury prone Mason Mount.
However, securing Baleba won’t be straightforward. Brighton, known for their shrewd transfer business, are likely to demand a fee exceeding £60 million, given Baleba’s three-year contract and rising stock.
Competition from rivals like Liverpool and Tottenham, who have also scouted the midfielder, could further complicate negotiations.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand praised Baleba on his podcast, calling him “a front-foot monster who’d thrive at Old Trafford.”
As the transfer window heats up, United fans are buzzing with anticipation. Landing Baleba could signal Amorim’s intent to build a midfield capable of competing with the Premier League’s elite, setting the stage for a thrilling 2025/26 campaign.
