Amorim worry over lack of signings as he highlights 'mistakes' at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim said the club’s cautious approach in the January transfer window is to avoid repeating past "mistakes."

Manchester United have yet to secure any new signings this month, with the only notable outgoing being Antony, who joined Real Betis on loan.

While Amorim is keen to strengthen his squad, uncertainty surrounds whether the club will bring in reinforcements.

Addressing the January strategy, Amorim said: “We have to be cautious. It’s essential we don’t make the same mistakes we’ve made before. Every decision must be carefully considered.”

Marcus Rashford’s future at the club remains uncertain, with the 27-year-old expected to depart before the transfer window closes.

Amorim, when asked about Rashford’s situation, reiterated his commitment to prioritizing effort and discipline within the squad.

“We missed a little pace to change the game and move some pieces,” Amorim admitted.

“But I prefer it that way. I would rather put [goalkeeping coach Jorge] Vital on the pitch than play someone who doesn’t give their maximum every day.

“It’s always the same reason. It comes down to training, the daily commitment, and how I believe a footballer should approach their life and work.

"If those things don’t change, I won’t change. That applies to every player—if you do the maximum and the right things, you’ll get your chance.”

Alejandro Garnacho, who has started United’s last two matches, is another player whose future remains unclear.

The winger has attracted interest from clubs such as Napoli and Chelsea.

“Nobody knows,” Amorim said regarding Garnacho’s situation. “Anything can happen. But Garna is improving in every department—his recovery, understanding of the game, and defensive work.

“I’m trying to find the best position for him. Today, he played more open and not as much inside. We need players who can win one-on-one duels. But honestly, I don’t know what will happen until the window closes.”

Amorim’s measured approach reflects the club’s current challenges and a desire to maintain stability while seeking the right opportunities to strengthen the team.

As the January window nears its end, United’s activity—or lack thereof—will be closely watched as they navigate a pivotal point in their season.
