Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has personally financed travel and accommodation for 30 club staff members and their families to attend the upcoming Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21.
This act comes amidst the club's stringent cost-cutting measures, which have included up to 200 redundancies and limited ticket allocations for staff and players, with no travel expenses covered.
Amorim, who took over managerial duties in November, brought several support staff with him from Sporting Lisbon, reported TalkSport.
Recognizing their unwavering commitment during a challenging season, he decided to reward their loyalty. Each invited staff member is allowed to bring up to two guests.
This initiative contrasts with the club's broader financial strategies, which have been met with criticism.
For instance, Paris Saint-Germain is covering expenses for 600 staff to attend their Champions League final, highlighting the disparity in staff treatment among elite clubs.
Despite reaching the Europa League final, United's domestic performance has been lackluster, currently sitting 16th in the Premier League.
Amorim has voiced concerns about the club's internal culture and has emphasized the need for significant changes during the summer.
He hinted that even Champions League qualification might not address deeper issues within the organization.
A source close to the club commented: "Ruben's gesture underscores his appreciation for the behind-the-scenes staff who play a crucial role in the team's operations. It's a morale booster during these uncertain times."
As United prepares for the final against Tottenham, Amorim's actions have not only boosted staff morale but also highlighted the importance of unity and appreciation within the club's ranks.
