Ruben Amorim says that it would be “hard” for Kobbie Mainoo to leave Manchester United unless they reinforced first.
Mainoo was not given the opportunity in the summer to go out on loan or leave to progress his career, while he has had his chances limited under Amorim.
Opinions have been diverse over Mainoo’s situation with Paul Scholes suggesting he has been badly treated and wrongly kept out of an under-performing side.
But on the other side, Roy Keane has argued that Mainoo is getting ahead of himself and should wait for his opportunity to arise in the club.
Unfortunately for the youth product, he has now picked up an injury at the worst possible time with Bruno Fernandez also in the treatment room.
Amorim has repeatedly said that Mainoo has been competing for a position in the team with Fernandez although recently he has shown more flexibility suggesting that he could also adapt his system to allow them both to play.
But the manager appears to be adamant on the possibility of Mainoo leaving in January claiming it would be difficult.
“If we are not getting someone it is hard, we are shorter even with a full squad we are shorter for something that can happen here and we are a club with a big responsibility,” Amorim told a press conference.
“We are dealing with all these issues and in your head, in my head, in everybody’s heads we need to win every game, it doesn’t matter there are no excuses, so it is going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don’t get a substitution.”
On the prospect of players arriving, Amorim also said they would only come if they fit into the club’s “plan”.
He continued: “Of course we are struggling at the moment but we have a plan, we are going to stick with the plan. If we see a player that we think can be the future of the club, he is going to come. If not we have Jack (Fletcher), we have Shea (Lacey), in a few weeks we will have Amad, Nous (Mazraoui) and Bryan (Mbeumo), the return of Bruno, Kobbie Mainoo so we will see.
We have potential to do more, I think I can do more with the team and I can help the team to be better, that I can say. It is different at our club, everything around our club is so simple as we have the talent to reach there … no there is so much more than that for the team. The only thing I can say is that if we have the full squad then I think I can help them to be better in the future.
