Ruben Amorim has admitted he should step aside as
Manchester United manager if the team carries their poor league form from the end of this season into the next campaign.
United’s dismal finish reached a new low with a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford to a West Ham side that hadn’t won in their previous eight games, leaving
United 16th in the Premier League table and on track for their worst points tally since the club’s 1930-31 relegation season.
Amorim was forthright after the match, questioning not only his own future but also the mentality and culture within the club.
“We are losing the feeling that we are a massive club and it's the end of the world to lose a game at home,” he said. “If we are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United and don't have that fear anymore, it is the most dangerous thing a big club can have.”
United’s league form has collapsed, with only two wins-both against relegated Ipswich and Leicester-since January 26, and the team now on a joint-worst winless run of seven Premier League games.
Amorim stressed the need for urgent change: “Everybody here has to think seriously about a lot of things. Everybody is thinking about the [Europa League] final.
"The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about. I'm talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team. We need to change that. It's a decisive moment in the history of the club.
"We need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave because we will not have a next season like this. If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different people.”
Amorim took responsibility for the situation, saying, “It is not the player’s fault. It is my fault. I am responsible. If we cannot change that really fast, we should give our place to different persons.”
He described himself as “embarrassed” by United’s position and echoed the need for a major overhaul in the summer, similar to the kind of “surgery” Ralf Rangnick once called for.
Looking ahead to the Europa League final, Amorim insisted that regardless of the outcome, United must address fundamental issues or he will not continue in his role: “If we commence the next season with the same sentiments, it might be time to make room for new individuals”
