Manchester United are seeking to sign two of Manchester City's biggest youth prospects and here are four reasons why they have an advantage.
The Reds are interested in signing teenagers Xavier Parker and Karim Cassim, with both players regarded as outstanding prospects within City's academy setup.
The move forms part of United's continued strategy of investing in elite young talent as the club looks to build for the future.
For a youth player United currently offer a clearer pathway to the first team, INEOS is focusing on the Academy, more first team integration while at City players are often moved on.
Since INEOS took control of football operations, there has been a clear emphasis on identifying some of the country's brightest prospects before they sign professional contracts.
Parker, an attacking midfielder, is considered one of the standout players in his age group.
Despite still being only 16, he has already featured for Manchester City's Under-18 side after previously joining the club from West Ham United.
Cassim is also highly regarded and has impressed throughout City's youth system, earning recognition at international level with England's youth teams.

Clearer pathway to the first team

This is thought to be the biggest factor.
United have shown in recent seasons that talented youngsters can break into senior football if they're good enough. Players such as:
  • Kobbie Mainoo
  • Ayden Heaven
  • Chido Obi
have all progressed quickly through the club's pathway.
At Manchester City, the route to the first team is often more difficult because of the depth of established international players in almost every position.

INEOS' focus on youth

Since INEOS took control of football operations, United have placed a greater emphasis on recruiting elite teenage talent.
The club has invested heavily in its academy and has made youth recruitment a priority, making Carrington an attractive destination for some of the country's best prospects.

Earlier senior opportunities

Even if they don't become regular first-team players immediately, United have generally been more willing to:
  • include youngsters in first-team training,
  • hand out debuts in cup competitions,
  • loan players strategically to aid development.
That can be appealing to ambitious teenagers.

Man City's model

City arguably have the best academy in England, but many graduates don't establish themselves in Pep Guardiola's first team.
Instead, a large number are:
  • sold for significant fees,
  • loaned out,
  • or move elsewhere to gain senior football.

Some young players at City may feel they have a better chance of reaching the Premier League sooner by joining another top club.
Manchester United believe Carrington continues to offer one of the best development pathways in English football, with several academy players progressing into the first team in recent seasons.
The rapid rise of youngsters such as Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi has only strengthened that reputation.
Still, City are expected to do everything possible to keep both players, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions are preparing improved offers in an attempt to convince Parker and Cassim to remain at the Etihad.
Any deal is still believed to be in its early stages, and there is no indication that either youngster has made a final decision on their future.
Should United succeed, however, it would represent a significant coup.
Not only would they be adding two of the country's brightest young prospects to their academy, but they would also be taking them from one of their biggest rivals.
