Man Utd youth: Biancheri latest star to leave in academy summer clearout

Gabriele Biancheri is the latest talented striker to leave Manchester United in a summer clearout of academy talent.

The striker has ended his spell at Old Trafford to join Austrian second-tier side Wacker Innsbruck in a move completed after the English transfer deadline.

The Austrian transfer window remained open until September 3, allowing the deal to go through after the summer window had closed in England.

United signed Biancheri from Cardiff City in early 2023 and the striker made an immediate impression, scoring on his Under-18s debut.

He went on to establish himself as a prolific scorer at academy level, finding the net regularly for both United's Under-18s and Under-21s.

However, a first-team opportunity never followed.

Biancheri also faced increased competition for a place following the arrival of Chido Obi, with the two young forwards competing for opportunities at academy level.

United sent Biancheri out on loan for the first time last January when he joined Rotherham.

The spell was intended to give the striker valuable experience in senior football, but he struggled to establish himself and the move failed to provide the breakthrough he would have hoped for.

Rotherham were relegated from League One, while Biancheri was unable to make a significant impact during his time at the club.

The 19-year-old has now decided to continue his career elsewhere, completing a permanent move to Wacker Innsbruck.

His departure brings an end to more than three years at United, where he developed through the club's academy and built a reputation as a reliable goalscorer at youth level.

However, with opportunities in the first team limited, Biancheri has opted for a fresh start in Austria as he looks to establish himself in senior football.

Biancheri's departure also fits into a wider summer of change within United's academy.

The club have been increasingly willing to make decisions over young players who are unlikely to break into the first team, either sending them out on loan to gain senior experience or agreeing permanent transfers where there is no clear pathway at Old Trafford.

Obi is among those to have left temporarily, joining Willem II on a season-long loan, while Jack Moorhouse, Dan Gore and Jayce Fitzgerald have also headed out to continue their development elsewhere.

United have also moved other players on permanently as part of a strategy designed to generate greater value from the academy.

The club are increasingly looking to include sell-on clauses, buy-back options and other protections when young players leave, ensuring they can still benefit if a former prospect goes on to develop elsewhere.

Biancheri's move to Austria is the latest example of United making a decision over a young player's future, with the club continuing to assess which academy prospects have a realistic route to the first team and which may need to build their careers elsewhere.
