Manchester United Under-18s maintained their position at the top of their U18 Premier League Cup group after battling back twice in a 2-2 draw away to Chelsea.
Darren Fletcher’s side had to show their resilience in the capital after falling behind to a superb Hezekiah Grimwade free-kick and later conceding to substitute Gabriel Sambou.
But
United responded on both occasions through Yuel Helafu and
Jaume Camacho to claim a valuable point in their second Group F fixture.
The result keeps United ahead of Chelsea in the standings on goal difference, with their final group match against Wolves at home next month set to determine their progression.
After a relatively quiet opening 45 minutes, the contest exploded into life following the interval, with both sides producing moments of quality and the Reds demonstrating their attacking threat despite having been out of action for three weeks.
United had last played in mid-September, when they thrashed Wolves 6-0, and Fletcher made four changes for the trip to Chelsea. Helafu and Rafe McCormack returned to the defence, Edson DeJonge-Seiros started on the left wing and Kai Rooney led the attack.
Rooney and Camacho combined promisingly in the early stages, with the latter seeing an effort blocked, while McCormack made an important intervention at the other end to deny Chelsea's Mathis Eboue.
The hosts' forward almost broke the deadlock inside the opening 15 minutes, driving a low effort across goal and watching it rebound off the outside of the far post.
United gradually grew into the contest, with Jariyah Shah forcing a save after a corner and Camacho seeing further attempts blocked. Rooney then cut inside onto his left foot and fired narrowly over, before Camacho tested Chelsea goalkeeper Bell with a near-post effort.
The breakthrough, however, arrived shortly after the restart.
Eboue immediately threatened, sending a dangerous ball across the face of goal before forcing Charlie Hardy into action. United responded, with Jay McEvoy whipping a free-kick narrowly wide and Camacho seeing another effort blocked by Dante Waite after good work from Junior Brown and Helafu.
Chelsea then struck in spectacular fashion. Grimwade stepped up to take a free-kick and curled an outstanding effort off the underside of the crossbar and into the top-left corner, leaving Hardy with no chance.
United refused to be knocked off course. Camacho tested Bell again before the Reds produced an equally impressive response just after the hour mark.
Helafu, operating at right-back, advanced into a dangerous position and cut inside onto his left foot before curling a superb finish into the net from the edge of the penalty area. It was a moment of individual brilliance that restored parity and rewarded United for their growing influence.
The visitors nearly completed the turnaround when Camacho released DeJonge-Seiros down the left side of the box. The winger attempted to lift the ball across goal, but his effort drifted agonisingly wide of the far post.
Instead, Chelsea regained the lead when Sambou, introduced from the bench earlier in the second half, collected a loose ball inside the area and finished with composure.
Once again, United had an answer.
Five minutes later, Jacob Watson supplied Camacho, who picked up possession at distance, beat his marker and drove into the box before finishing confidently to make it 2-2. The goal was a deserved reward for Camacho, who had threatened consistently throughout the match.
Both teams searched for a winner in the closing stages. Brown looked poised to break through on goal before Waite produced a crucial last-ditch challenge, while McEvoy fired into the side netting during stoppage time.
There was to be no decisive fifth goal, but United could take considerable encouragement from their response to twice falling behind.
Helafu's superb equaliser and Camacho's composed finish ensured Fletcher's side left Chelsea with a point, maintaining their place at the summit of Group F ahead of their final group fixture against Wolves next month.
