JJ Gabriel is now old enough to make his
Manchester United Premier League debut – but the teenage sensation still faces three significant restrictions.
Gabriel was previously unable to play in England's top flight because of his age. Premier League rules state that players must turn 15 on or before August 31 of the relevant season.
Born on October 6, 2010, Gabriel was only 14 at the August 2025 cut-off and was therefore ineligible to play in the Premier League last season.
Gabriel turned 16 in October 2026 and meets the age requirement for the 2026/27 campaign, meaning Michael Carrick can select him for a Premier League match if he believes he is ready.
He now still faces age restrictions which include him using the United dressing room and he can't sign a professional contract.
After an impressive rise through United's academy, there is growing excitement about when that opportunity might come.
Gabriel has already been involved with the first-team squad during pre-season and made his senior debut in the friendly win over Atletico Madrid earlier this month.
The youngster came on for Bryan Mbeumo in the 82nd minute, becoming the youngest player to appear for United's first team.
However, despite now being eligible for Premier League football, Gabriel must still follow three important rules.
He cannot wear United's gambling-branded training kit
Premier League players under the age of 18 cannot wear club clothing displaying gambling sponsorship.
That means Gabriel is unable to wear United's training kit featuring the club's £20million-per-year Betway sponsorship.
The Premier League has also introduced a ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship from the 2026/27 season, although betting companies can still appear on training wear and shirt sleeves.
He cannot use the first-team dressing room
Gabriel is also required to change separately from United's senior players.
Premier League regulations require players under 18 to use a separate changing area during training and matches.
He can enter the first-team dressing room once the senior players have changed, allowing him to take part in Carrick's team talks.
He cannot sign a professional contract yet
Perhaps most significantly, Gabriel remains unable to sign a professional contract with United.
He will continue on youth terms until he turns 17 on October 6, 2027, when he will become eligible to sign his first professional deal.
That does not stop United from using him in the Premier League, however.
And after scoring 29 goals for the Under-18s last season and making such rapid progress through the academy, Gabriel's first competitive appearance for Carrick's side is now a genuine possibility.
