Manchester United are making waves in the transfer market, with manager
Ruben Amorim spearheading an ambitious move to sign Napoli’s world-class striker Victor Osimhen.
According to reports, the
Red Devils have tabled an official offer for the 26-year-old Nigerian, who has been identified as Amorim’s top striker target to transform United’s faltering attack.
With a tantalizingly low transfer fee in play, this could be the blockbuster signing to ignite United’s revival.
Osimhen: The Perfect Fit for Amorim’s Vision
Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, has been a revelation this season, scoring an astonishing 29 goals in 34 appearances.
His prolific form has reaffirmed his status as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards, with a career tally of 140 goals in 258 matches across stints in Belgium, France, Italy, and Turkey.
Described as “world-class” by former manager Jose Mourinho, Osimhen’s blend of physicality, pace, and clinical finishing makes him an ideal candidate to lead United’s line in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.
United’s interest in Osimhen comes as no surprise, given their struggles in front of goal.
The team has managed just 37 Premier League goals in 29 matches this season, a tally worse than relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Current strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have underperformed, combining for only 14 goals in 83 appearances. Hojlund, in particular, endured a 22-match goal drought earlier this season, prompting reports that Amorim has transfer-listed the Dane.
Osimhen, by contrast, offers proven goal-scoring pedigree and the experience to elevate United’s attack to compete at the highest level.
A Bargain Fee Sparks United’s Move
Turkish reporter Resat Can Ozkurt has revealed that United have accelerated their efforts to secure Osimhen’s signature, with the club submitting an official bid to Napoli.
While the exact amount of the proposal remains undisclosed, sources suggest that Napoli are open to a permanent transfer for a fee significantly lower than Osimhen’s £64m release clause.
Reports from AfricaFoot indicate that a deal could be struck for as little as £26-30m, a remarkable bargain for a player of Osimhen’s caliber. This reduced fee is attributed to Napoli’s strategic shift, with Antonio Conte favoring Romelu Lukaku and Osimhen’s contract running until 2026.
United’s proactive approach has been fueled by a shift in the transfer landscape.
Chelsea, previously considered Osimhen’s preferred destination due to prior negotiations, have cooled their interest and are now focusing on Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap.
This development has given United a clear run at Osimhen, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain also monitoring the situation but yet to make concrete moves. Galatasaray, despite their desire to keep Osimhen permanently, are unlikely to match the financial might of Europe’s elite clubs.
Competition and Challenges
While United are in pole position, the race for Osimhen is far from over.
Arsenal have included him on a shortlist alongside Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, and Hugo Ekitike, while Liverpool and Barcelona are keeping tabs on his situation.
Osimhen’s focus remains on helping Galatasaray win the Turkish Super Lig and Cup, and he has not publicly confirmed his next move.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano notes that Osimhen has privately decided to leave Galatasaray to advance his career, with the Premier League as his preferred destination.
United’s pursuit is not without hurdles. The club’s financial constraints, governed by the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), may require player sales to fund the deal.
Potential departures include Hojlund, Zirkzee, and high-earners like Casemiro, Victor Lindelof, and Harry Maguire. Additionally, United’s 15th-place standing in the Premier League and lack of Champions League football could deter Osimhen, who reportedly prioritizes European competition.
However, a successful Europa League campaign—where United face Lyon in the quarter-finals—could secure a Champions League spot and bolster their appeal.
Amorim’s Broader Transfer Strategy
Osimhen is just one piece of Amorim’s puzzle as he seeks to reshape United’s squad.
The Portuguese manager has also been linked with a €105 million double swoop for Atalanta’s Ederson and Mateo Retegui, as well as Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and Leicester’s Mads Hermansen.
These targets reflect Amorim’s focus on strengthening key areas: midfield, attack, and goalkeeping. United are also eyeing Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda and PSG’s Nuno Mendes, both of whom Amorim knows from his time in Lisbon, to bolster the wing-back positions crucial to his system.
To facilitate these signings, United are prepared to offload underperforming or injury-prone players. Alongside Hojlund and Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford’s loan move to Aston Villa is reportedly permanent, with no recall clause even if Amorim departs.
Andre Onana’s future is also uncertain, with Amorim reportedly unconvinced by the goalkeeper’s performances.
A Statement Signing for United
Landing Osimhen would be a coup for United, signaling their intent to reclaim a place among Europe’s elite. The reported agreement with the striker, as claimed by Turkish journalist Serdar Ali Celikler, suggests that negotiations are advancing rapidly.
If United can navigate the financial and competitive challenges, Osimhen’s arrival could mark the beginning of a new era under Amorim, providing the firepower needed to climb the Premier League table and compete for silverware.
