Manchester United’s pursuit of Napoli striker
Victor Osimhen has taken several twists this summer, with conflicting reports about the Nigerian’s next move.
United have made signing a top striker a priority after a disappointing domestic season, and Osimhen—coming off a prolific loan spell at Galatasaray—was seen as a leading candidate to lead Ruben Amorim’s attack.
Osimhen, 26, enjoyed a standout year in Turkey, scoring 26 league goals and 37 in all competitions, reigniting interest from major European clubs.
United reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Osimhen and were prepared to activate his €75 million release clause, viewing him as the ideal addition to boost their goal output.
Amorim’s side struggled for goals last season, and Osimhen’s athleticism and finishing made him a prime target, reported the
Manchester Evening News.
However, the deal has hit complications. Reports from Turkey and Italy indicate that Osimhen, after being frozen out at Napoli and failing to secure a move to Saudi Arabia last year, is now prioritizing a permanent return to Galatasaray, where he thrived on loan.
Galatasaray have offered to meet his substantial wage demands—reportedly £10.4 million a year—something Premier League clubs, including United, have hesitated to match.
United’s hopes of landing Osimhen have faded as the striker is unwilling to take a pay cut, and he is set for fresh talks with Galatasaray this week.
With Osimhen likely to stay in Turkey, United are shifting their focus to other attacking options, including Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, as they continue to search for a proven Premier League goalscorer.
Despite being close to a blockbuster move, United’s pursuit of Osimhen now appears all but over, with the player set to remain in Istanbul barring a late change in negotiations.
