Ruben Amorim is set to continue his overhaul at
Manchester United this summer and he plans to take two young players with big hopes to the United States.
After a disappointing season that saw United finish in the bottom half of the Premier League and lose the Europa League final,
Amorim and the INEOS-led hierarchy have made clear that significant changes are necessary to restore the club’s competitiveness.
Amorim’s top priority is to inject more pace and physicality into midfield, addressing a glaring weakness that was exposed in key matches last season.
United’s midfield has often been outmatched in terms of energy and athleticism, and Amorim wants dynamic, box-to-box players who can press high and match the intensity of top Premier League opponents.
“He’s not looking for passengers—he wants engines,” sources close to the club have said.
His preferred 3-4-3 system relies heavily on wing-backs with the stamina and tactical awareness to contribute both defensively and in attack.
Amorim and his players will take part in the Premier League's annual 'Summer Series' tournament in the US with friendlies against West Ham United, Everton and Bournemouth all in the calendar later this month.
Diego Leon may have a tailor-made chance to impress at a juncture when United really need him the most.
A capable left-wing back, it's a role that has caused Amorim huge issues. Luke Shaw's injury problems and age probably mean he cannot cope with the physical demands placed on him in the position.
Early in his tenure, the lack of natural left-sided options forced Amorim to deploy right-back Diogo Dalot out of position, underlining the urgency for a specialist in that role.
United’s current left-back options have been hampered by injuries, and Amorim has repeatedly urged club officials to prioritize this position in the transfer market.
And Leon could be the answer to his problems and he certainly is set for plenty of chances in the US, reported the
Manchester Evening News.
Another notable name to watch out for is, of course, Chido Obi, with United's striker situation so up in the air.
There had been some suggestions that the teenager would be heading out on loan, but with Rasmus Hojlund's future unknown, pre-season will be another huge chance for the former Arsenal man to stake a claim.
The club has already made progress in the market, securing Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5 million deal and pursuing further attacking reinforcements.
United are also working to offload several high-profile players, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony, in what is being described as a “fire sale” to fund new arrivals and reshape the squad’s wage structure.
As the transfer window progresses, Amorim’s vision is clear: build a younger, faster, and more physical Manchester United capable of competing in the Premier League’s most demanding fixtures.
The next wave of arrivals is expected to reflect this strategy, with at least two more signings targeted before the start of the new campaign.
