Manchester United are preparing £47m bid for France's "best midfielder" at the World Cup, Manu Koné.
The 25-year-old France international has emerged as one of the club's leading targets following an impressive 2026 World Cup campaign, with United having identified him as a key part of Michael Carrick's midfield rebuild.
United's interest has intensified after a proposed move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson reportedly collapsed due to medical concerns, prompting the club to turn its attention to Roma's Koné.

United's midfield rebuild

Carrick is expected to oversee significant changes in midfield ahead of the new season.
The departure of Casemiro has left a major void in the squad, while Manuel Ugarte is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury during international duty.
United have already strengthened the department by completing a deal for Brazilian international Andrey Santos, while experienced Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans is also expected to join following the completion of his medical.
Koné is viewed as a different profile altogether. Athletic and battling out of possession, he combines ball-winning ability with the confidence to carry possession through midfield and break opposition lines. His arrival would add pace, energy and defensive intensity to Carrick's evolving system.

Competition for his signature

A move is unlikely to be straightforward. Reports suggest Roma previously rejected a €40 million offer from Atlético Madrid and are holding out for a fee closer to €55-60 million.
Liverpool and Arsenal have also been credited with an interest, while Roma's financial position could force the Serie A club to consider selling one of their most valuable assets before the transfer window closes.

High praise from former United stars

Koné's performances for France have attracted widespread praise.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was particularly impressed during the World Cup, saying:
"He is France's best midfielder this World Cup. France has conceded only two goals not because of their good defence but because of Manu Koné in the midfield... his tackles are so smart."
Another former United favourite, Patrice Evra, believes Koné has all the attributes to succeed in England.
"He has energy, he carries the ball, he likes duels and he works for the team. If he goes to England with a manager who knows how to use him, I think he can do well."

Why Koné appeals to Carrick

Koné has developed a reputation as one of Europe's most complete young midfielders. Comfortable receiving possession under pressure, he is capable of driving through midfield with the ball, winning duels and protecting his defence while also helping launch attacks.
His athleticism would complement the technical qualities of Tielemans and the all-action style of Andrey Santos, potentially giving United a far more balanced midfield than in recent seasons.
Despite growing speculation over his future, Koné has remained focused on international duty.
"Honestly, right now I'm only thinking about the World Cup. My future? We'll see after the World Cup."
With United expected to continue reshaping their squad before the transfer deadline, Koné appears to be firmly on the club's shortlist. Should they meet Roma's valuation and fend off interest from rival Premier League clubs, the French international could become one of the marquee signings of Carrick's first full season in charge.
