Manchester United are plotting a January double swoop on PSG, with manager Ruben Amorim reportedly making a personal request for one of the two signings.
Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford has started on shaky ground, with five losses in his first 10 matches.
Upcoming fixtures against Newcastle, Liverpool, and Arsenal (FA Cup) present further challenges. A significant factor in Amorim’s struggles has been a squad ill-suited to his tactical style.
Reports from The Sun claim Amorim was “stunned” by the lack of intensity he witnessed during his first week of training.
Furthermore, United’s squad lacks natural fits for key positions. They need a reliable wing-back, a consistent 20-goal-a-season striker, and creative No. 10s—roles Amorim prioritizes over traditional wingers like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.
Recognizing the uphill battle, the club has approved a comprehensive squad rebuild. Among the first targets is PSG left wing-back Nuno Mendes, who is wanted by Amorim personally.

Nuno Mendes on radar

The 22-year-old Portugal international has 18 months left on his contract, with negotiations over an extension reportedly stalling.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg noted that Mendes to United is “one to watch,” and RMC Sport claimed PSG are considering a January sale to avoid losing him for less later.
Additionally, RMC Sport reported that United have already “made an offer” to Mendes, one expected to surpass PSG’s current terms.
Mendes, open to a new challenge, could address United’s wing-back issues and reunite with Amorim, who helped him break through at Sporting Lisbon.

Kolo Muani in frame

Another name linked to Old Trafford is PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani, who has struggled to impress under Luis Enrique.
According to TEAMtalk insider Fraser Gillan, Kolo Muani is set to leave Paris in January, with a Premier League move appealing to the 26-year-old.
Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea have shown interest, but Amorim is pushing for United to take the lead. PSG signed Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt for €90m, but his January exit could come via a loan with a view to a permanent summer deal.

Additional developments

United’s rebuilding efforts may also include bolstering the defense. Gazzetta dello Sport reports AC Milan are open to selling Fikayo Tomori, whom they see as a “luxury” asset.
With Victor Lindelof set to leave as a free agent in the summer, Tomori could provide much-needed depth. However, Newcastle also remain in the race for the England international.
Meanwhile, Napoli under Antonio Conte are reportedly interested in signing United left-back Luke Shaw.
Shaw’s frequent injuries have made him a potential candidate for departure, with Napoli targeting Premier League players as part of their recruitment strategy.

Rebuild underway

As the January window approaches, Amorim’s vision for a revamped United squad is becoming clearer. Both Mendes and Kolo Muani could provide the tactical fits he requires, while additional reinforcements in defense might signal a bold new era for the Red Devils.
