Man Utd target Hall
Manchester United have been given a price for Lewis Hall as they close in on a deal.
With Luke Shaw ageing and Patrick Dorgu being utilised in a more advanced role under Michael Carrick, the left-back position has become one of United's most pressing priorities this window.
United have shortlisted both Hall and Fulham's Antonee Robinson as potential options, offering two very different propositions in terms of cost.
Newcastle's valuation of Hall sits at between £50 million and £60 million — a figure that reflects both his quality and the fact he is contracted until 2029, giving the Magpies every reason to hold firm.
Robinson, by contrast, is entering the final years of his deal at Craven Cottage and could represent a considerably cheaper alternative.
But it is Hall who appears to be the priority, and United appear undeterred by the price tag.
Sources suggest United believe the 21-year-old wants to leave St James' Park for Old Trafford, with the lure of Champions League football a significant factor after Newcastle failed to qualify for next season's competition.
The World Cup has added extra fuel to the fire. Hall's omission from Thomas Tuchel's England squad stunned many, with Gary Lineker among those making their feelings known.
"I think the best left-back has not been picked: Lewis Hall," Lineker said. "Did he see Lewis Hall against Yamal? He didn't give him a kick."
Reports suggest Hall's frustration stems partly from being played out of position at Newcastle this season — a situation that has only strengthened his desire for a fresh start somewhere his role is clearly defined.
Hall is believed to be unhappy with how the latter stages of the campaign unfolded, with manager Eddie Howe preferring the experienced Dan Burn ahead of him in crucial fixtures.
The slight was then compounded at international level. Hall was left "devastated" after Tuchel omitted him from England's 26-man World Cup squad, despite being nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.
United sporting director Jason Wilcox is understood to be a huge admirer, viewing Hall as both competition for Shaw and his long-term successor at left-back.
Newcastle will demand every penny of their asking price and with Hall tied down until 2029 they are in no rush to sell. But a player pushing for the move, a club that clearly needs him, and a price now firmly on the table — the pieces are falling into place.
