Aston Villa's World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, has been strongly linked to a move to
Manchester United. The potential transfer comes as Aston Villa faces pressure to comply with financial regulations.
United's interest in Martinez has been long-standing. According to Argentinian media outlet T
yC Sports, the club made an inquiry as early as January 2025, six months prior.
While United initially opted to continue with
Andre Onana for the remainder of the past season, his subsequent underwhelming performance has now definitively led the club to re-evaluate their goalkeeping options, and if Onana is sold, they are expected to pursue Martinez.
Martinez himself has remained guarded when questioned about his future but speaking recently while on international duty with Argentina, he commented: "My future? I don't know. I'm here to play for the national team, and that's all I care about right now. The market has just opened, so there's still a lot to do."
Martinez, 32, has been a cornerstone of Aston Villa's recent successes since his arrival in 2020. His tenure has seen the club qualify for European competitions, including a top-four finish in the 2023-24 Premier League season, securing Champions League football.
Individually, Martinez's exceptional form was recognized with the Premier League's 'Save of the Season' award for December 2024. On the international stage, he has been a key figure for Argentina, notably winning the Golden Glove at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa America tournaments.
His current contract with Aston Villa runs until the summer of 2027, having signed an extension in January 2022.
However, despite his importance, sources suggest that Aston Villa may be compelled to sell key assets to meet Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) before the end of June. Given his high profile and consistent performances, Martinez is seen as a prime candidate to generate significant transfer funds.
Regarding a potential transfer fee, sources close to Aston Villa initially valued Martinez at approximately £40 million. However, reports suggest that Villa might now be receptive to offers of at least £25 million.
Manchester United faces competition for Martinez's signature, with Atlético Madrid also reportedly keen, and unspecified Saudi Arabian clubs showing interest. However, Martinez is understood to prefer remaining in Europe.
His commanding presence, renowned penalty-saving abilities, and celebrated winning mentality could provide a significant boost to Manchester United's squad should a transfer materialize.
