Carlos Baleba's 'unique qualities' behind £70m midfielder signing for Man Utd

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton with the club pointing to his "unique combination of qualities".

The 22-year-old Cameroon international has put pen to paper on a contract until June 2031 following a £70 million move,

He becomes another major addition to Michael Carrick's midfield as United continue to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.

Baleba has established himself as one of the Premier League's most highly rated young midfielders since arriving at Brighton, combining his physical strength with his ability to carry the ball through midfield.

His numbers underline his defensive contribution.

During the 2024/25 campaign, Baleba's combined total of tackles and interceptions was the sixth-highest among Premier League midfielders, while he ranked fourth for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes.

He was also among the league's elite last season, ranking in the top eight per cent for tackles and interceptions and the top one per cent for second balls won.

Baleba made 31 Premier League appearances as Brighton secured qualification for the Conference League.

Now he will look to take the next step in his development at Old Trafford.

United director of football Jason Wilcox believes Baleba has the qualities to make a significant impact at Old Trafford.

“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.”

Wilcox also highlighted Baleba's experience despite his age.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”

The United director added that Baleba's desire to move to Old Trafford was an important factor in completing the deal.

“Carlos’ determination to join Manchester United and his confidence that we will achieve our shared ambitions mean that he is the perfect signing as we continue to build a dynamic and entertaining team ready to compete across multiple competitions.”

Baleba now joins Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as another major midfield addition, giving Carrick significantly greater options in the centre of the pitch.

At just 22, he also fits United's wider strategy of building a younger squad while adding players who already have proven Premier League experience.

The challenge now is for Baleba to turn his considerable potential into consistent performances in a Manchester United shirt.

Baleba made no secret of his excitement at completing the move.

The midfielder also singled out Carrick, who will now oversee his development at United.
