Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has voiced major concerns that the club could be on the verge of making a £70 million transfer mistake this summer under Ruben Amorim, specifically regarding the future of rising star Alejandro Garnacho.
Scholes, speaking in his TNT Sports column, highlighted Garnacho's impressive development, noting the 20-year-old has become an automatic selection under Amorim in recent months.
However, Scholes fears that Garnacho’s lack of a natural position in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system could see him pushed out of the side, especially with the imminent arrival of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who is expected to play alongside Bruno Fernandes in the roles behind the striker.
Scholes warned, “He’s perfect in a regular 4-3-3. He will be a real threat. He needs to tidy up his decision-making and finishing, sometimes his final ball is a bit rash but he’s a young player so that’s to be expected.
"I fear we will sell him for £50-£60m for PSR reasons. It’s been rumoured, hasn’t it? I fear he will end up scoring 25 to 30 goals for somebody else, that’s how good I think this lad can be.
"Shoehorning him into this system might be tricky, I’m struggling to find a position for him in Ruben Amorim’s system. I don’t want them to sell him, I hate the thought of that, but I think they could do. I wouldn’t like it. He frustrates me but he’s often the biggest threat for Manchester United.”
United’s stance is unchanged: they are not actively pushing Garnacho out, but will consider a sale if a bid of around £70m is received.
Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring the situation, though only Napoli have made a concrete offer so far, which fell short of United’s valuation1.
With Amorim aiming to revamp United’s attack and competition for places intensifying, Scholes’ warning underscores the risk of losing a player who could become a world-beater elsewhere if United decide to cash in this summer
