England head coach Thomas Tuchel says that
Mason Greenwood is “not a priority at the moment.”
The 23-year-old former
Manchester United striker, now playing at Marseille, has been the subject of growing speculation about his international future, with both England and Jamaica vying for his commitment.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming international break, Tuchel clarified that he has not spoken to Greenwood or his camp since taking charge, but crucially added he was not “closing doors” on a potential return.
That subtle remark has been interpreted as a cautious opening, suggesting that Greenwood could be reconsidered if his form continues to improve and circumstances change.
Greenwood has not featured for England since 2020 and has yet to add to his solitary senior cap.
His consistent performances in Ligue 1 — where he has impressed with goals and creativity — have reignited debate over whether he deserves another chance.
For now, Tuchel’s priority lies elsewhere, with a strong core of attacking talent already competing for places. But his refusal to completely rule out Greenwood’s involvement offers the striker a glimmer of hope.
The tug-of-war with Jamaica also remains a factor. Greenwood turned down a recent call-up from the Caribbean nation, citing his desire to focus on club football.
Jamaica manager Steve McClaren has kept the door open, describing Greenwood as a player who “loves Jamaica,” but admitted the situation is frustrating.
Tuchel’s careful wording reflects a delicate balance: he is under no pressure to recall Greenwood now, but by leaving the door ajar, he ensures England retains an option should the player’s form make him impossible to ignore.
For Greenwood, the challenge is clear — continue delivering for Marseille and prove he can not only rebuild his career but also earn back a place on the international stage.
For the moment, it remains a waiting game, but Tuchel’s words suggest the story may not be finished just yet.
