Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to be the interim head coach role at
Manchester United and has given a reason why he believes he should be given another chance.
He and Michael Carrick are understood to have held a first round of informal discussions with sporting director Jason Wilcox on Tuesday and are set to hold further talks, though not on Wednesday with the focus being on United’s Premier League match at Burnley.
It is understood there could be roles for both Solskjaer and Carrick in the new backroom team. Another former Red Devils player –
Darren Fletcher – will lead the team at Burnley.
And Solskjaer previously has backed his record at the club highlighting his second- and third-place finishes in the league.
"I maintain that finishing second and third in my two full seasons wasn’t bad given the level in the Premier League," he said.
"We also reached a European final, but I see what Jose [Mourinho] means when he says that his best achievement was getting his United side to second in the league."
United are believed to be considering other options too – including ex-United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The club are without a permanent head coach after Ruben Amorim’s sacking on Monday.
A heated meeting between Wilcox and Amorim last Friday triggered a series of events which ended with the Portuguese’s dismissal on Monday morning.
Solskjaer took over initially on an interim basis in December 2018 following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, before he was given the job on a permanent basis the following March.
Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021, with Carrick placed in temporary charge.
United head into the Burnley match sixth in the Premier League, with eight wins from their 20 matches so far.
It is reported that Solskjaer has now told United bosses he can make Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Šeško and Amad Diallo the best attacking force in the Premier League with his attacking style.
Despite his difficult exit in 2021, Solskjaer still speaks fondly of his time at the club: "I just remember a great time at United apart from the last six weeks. Great people — and the culture is in the people. Going back to United was like going back to my family, like I’d never been away."
