Jason Wilcox is being tasked with finding the next
Manchester United manager, and
Paul Scholes asked "how many chances will he get?" after making two mistakes.
He was given the job of sporting director in 2024 after doing well at Southampton but he has had a mixed record so far at Old Trafford.
Counting against him in particular have been the decisions to give Erick ten Hag a new contract and then offering the head coach job to
Ruben Amorim.
"Sir Jim (Ratcliffe) has put his trust in him and now it's how many chances do you have to get the right man, I think he's already made a couple of mistakes. Ten Hag with a new contract - it went on for too long and this one has obviously been a disaster really," said Scholes, referring to Amorim.
"It's how many chances you give him, I don't know as a sporting director, do you get three, four, five chances?"
And Butt believes that Wilcox's past where he was an academy coach at Manchester City has also not helped him.
"I think the Man City connection kills him, let's be honest he's going to have to take that on the chin, but he's got the big job, he's obviously got the big wage, he runs the club on the football side so you got to take a bit of c*** it's part and parcel of what what it comes with," said Butt.
"He's been in football a long time he knows he's not going to get a smooth ride, if only because of the football club that it is, and the football club that he was at. He's going to get people saying things this is not right and it will be all over the show now that he was a Man City coach."
And Butt says that Wilcox has not not brought in enough people who are from within United and know the club inside out - while at the same time bringing in former City staff.
"For me with Jason I do think he's killed himself a little bit because he's employed a hell of a lot of people that are from outside that bubble," continued Butt, on
The Good, The Bad and The Football."When you bring in people from outside it helps but when you flip it and you bring in so many people from outside and not enough people from within, it changes it. And if you look at the people he's brought in over the last 18 months let's say, they've all been Man City.
"They are all obviously very good at the job and it's not me sitting here and going, 'you've got to be
Man Utd', but you have to have some sort of feeling for the football club.
"There's only one person at the football club, Darren (Fletcher) And he's obviously taken over the football club now, which is great, but he's going to need help. He's going to need help, and I hope he does really well."
