Ruben Amorim is targeting two high-profile centre-back signings, aligning with club legend Paul Scholes' recent calls for a defensive overhaul.
Despite hopes that
Amorim’s arrival and Erik ten Hag’s departure would bring immediate improvements, United’s struggles have continued.
The Portuguese manager has won just four of his first 13 Premier League games, leaving the
Red Devils languishing in 13th place—far below the club’s expectations.
Scholes, who spent his entire playing career at United, has been vocal about the squad’s deficiencies, urging the club to strengthen its defensive spine.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, he emphasized the need for top-tier reinforcements: "There are a few things that are concerning. There's a lot he (Amorim) needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don't see a core of players.
"When you look at teams, you look right down the spine. Liverpool: great goalkeeper, great centre-half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don't think United have any of that in any position."
"I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre-halves, two centre-midfield players, and two centre-forwards. Alright, I'll go for one centre-midfielder and one centre-forward, but with a bit of stature, a bit of quality, and really create a spine. When you've got that spine right, then you can add bits to it."
United appear to be acting on Scholes’ advice, with The Sun reporting that Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen is on the club’s radar for a summer move.
The 19-year-old Spaniard has been a revelation for the Cherries this season, quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising young defenders. His £55 million release clause becomes active in July, attracting significant interest from multiple clubs.
Meanwhile, BILD claims United are also tracking RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba. The 22-year-old French centre-back, who joined Leipzig from Lyon in 2023, has a release clause set at around £75 million.
Reports suggest he could be in line for a major transfer this summer, and United may be in the race to secure his signature.
With defensive frailties evident throughout the season, investing in Huijsen and Lukeba could be a crucial step in Amorim’s rebuilding project—just as Scholes has urged.
