Manchester United are now open to serious offers for Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Højlund, having previously deemed the youthful trio untouchable during the summer.
This shift comes as Sir Jim Ratcliffe intensifies his efforts to balance the club's finances, a move that risks further alienating an already unsettled fanbase.
United have pushed the boundaries of football’s financial regulations, spending over £600 million in less than three years under Erik ten Hag.
To fund their spending spree, the Dutchman has had to offload homegrown talents like Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga.
Mainoo and Garnacho, heralded as future stars of United’s midfield and attack, were initially protected from such measures.
However, the club has now placed every member of Ruben Amorim’s squad on the market, with sales considered if suitable bids are received.
While United are not actively seeking to sell Mainoo, Garnacho, or Højlund, this marks a significant departure from their previous stance.
Despite this, the trio remain integral to the club’s plans, and listening to offers does not guarantee their departure.
The shift reflects a broader strategy, where no player is off-limits for the right price. Even last summer’s arrivals—Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee—could be sold if attractive offers emerge.
Homegrown players, in particular, offer a financial advantage, as their sales are recorded as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
This approach has also contributed to United’s willingness to part ways with Marcus Rashford, who has expressed a desire for a new challenge.
Meanwhile, manager Ruben Amorim remains committed to his 3-4-3 system, shaping his squad through targeted signings and sales based on tactical fit.
Mainoo, viewed alongside Ugarte as a first-choice midfield option, faces an uncertain future due to a contract impasse.
Despite signing a long-term deal in February 2023 worth £20,000 per week, the 19 year old, now an established England international, is seeking a new contract reflecting his growing importance.
However, negotiations have stalled as United prioritize extending Amad Diallo’s contract.
Chelsea has emerged as a leading contender for Mainoo’s signature and may test the resolve of United’s new hierarchy with a bid as early as this summer.
