Marcus Rashford has returned to the
Manchester United squad for Monday night’s clash with Newcastle.
It marks his first inclusion in
Ruben Amorim’s matchday list in four matches and comes amid widespread speculation that he will leave the club in January.
Rashford last featured on December 12 in the Europa League against Viktoria Plzen but was dropped for the Manchester derby three days later.
Since then, the 27-year-old has missed defeats to Bournemouth and Wolves, as well as the Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Tottenham.
During his absence, Rashford fueled speculation about his future at Old Trafford, hinting at a possible move away.
Earlier this month, he stated he was ready for a "new challenge" after spending 19 years at the club. However, with over three years remaining on the contract he signed in July 2023, his future remains uncertain.
This season, Rashford has managed seven goals and three assists in 24 appearances across all competitions. Since Amorim’s arrival in November, he has scored three goals in six matches.
The Portuguese manager will be hoping Rashford’s return can spark a change in fortunes for United, who are coming off three consecutive defeats in all competitions.
A victory at home against Newcastle could lift United to 11th place at the halfway point of the season.
The Red Devils have struggled in the league, securing just six wins so far, while their opponents currently sit seventh after three consecutive wins without conceding.
Rashford’s comeback is timely as Amorim faces a depleted squad for the Newcastle fixture.
Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are suspended, while Victor Lindelof, Mason Mount, and Luke Shaw remain sidelined with injuries.
United face another tough test on Sunday when they travel to Anfield to take on league leaders Liverpool. Confidence has become a major issue as well at the club due to the defeats and a positive performance against Newcastle would be very welcome.
